Phlox divaricata 'Mary Helen' (15) Quarts
Common Name: Woodland Phlox.
Zones 4 to 8.
Full sun to part shade.
Mature size: 12 to 15 inch high, spreads 12 to 20 inches;
upright habit herbaceous perennial.
Magenta streaked purple flowers bloom April through June. Green, lance shaped leaves grow into a spreading, flowing plant. Phlox divaricata can form large colonies over time as leafy shoots spread along the ground rooting at the nodes.
Native Range: from Pennsylvania to South Dakota to the Gulf of Mexico.
'Mary Helen' grows well in moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soil. Rich, moist, organic soil and mulch are beneficial as it is intolerant of drought, but it will grow well in average conditions.
Deadheading faded flower panicles may prolong blooms into early fall.
Attributes: border plant, cut flower, mass plantings. Once established it can form a tightly-matting groundcover on slopes and banks. Fragrance attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. |
