Mentha requienii (15) Flat
Common Name: Corsican mint,
Zones 7 to 10.
Full sun to part shade.
Plants form a flat carpeting perennial; evergreen in southern zones. Growth rate: Fast; runners form a carpet of green.
Round tiny bright-green leaves. Small light purple flowers appear in midsummer. Used as flavoring for creme de menthe liqueur, it releases a minty fragrance when stepped on. Easily divided by ripping apart into smaller pieces.
Mentha requienii prefers moist, fertile soil, but will grow in drier soils than the other mints and in heavy clay soils. Corsican mint is drought-sensitive.
Perfect for planting between paving stones in a moist, part-shaded area. Stepping on the plant will release the pleasant scent. Where plants are not winter hardy, it will often self-seed for several years.
Excellent as a border plant, container, edging, ground cover, mass plantings, and between stepping stones. |
