Description
Stachys byzantine 'Helene von Stein' ('Big Ears') (30)ct Flat
Common name: Lamb's Ear-Giant.
Zone 4 to 8.
Full sun to part shade.
Plants reach 8 to 10 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide,
clump-forming herbaceous perennial.
Growth rate: Moderate.

Leaves are velvety soft, greenish-silver, and shaped like its namesake. 'Big Ears' has huge leaves that are at least twice the size of regular lamb's ears. Rarely sending up small flower stalks, it is listed as a non-flowering cultivar. Perhaps more heat and humidity tolerant than other varieties.

Missouri Botanical Garden Emeritus Plants of Merit

Stachys grows best in full sun but will also tolerate partial shade. Good drainage is essential for this plant. Plants may be clipped back hard immediately after blooming, to tidy up the clumps for the rest of the season. Divide every 3 to 4 years in spring, or more frequently if plants become woody in the center.

This genus contains many members with foliage and plant habits completely different from the common gray-leafed (and somewhat invasive) Lamb's Ears.

Attributes: Border plants, Container, Drought Tolerant, Mass Planting, Salt Tolerant, Easy to grow, Deer and Rabbit resistant.

*Sold as a Flat of thirty (30) plants in 50mm Ellepots.

The Ellepot System is a method of growing in a peat media filled paper tube. Ellepots are environmentally friendly and decompose in the garden.

An Ellepot is a root permeable, biodegradable paper sleeve, instead of plastic. It is beneficial to plant development as root system does not spiral, and natural root development is encouraged.

Guidelines for Handling and Transplanting Elle Plugs

1) We strive to send every Elle plug with sufficient moisture to last through shipping. Upon delivery of your order, inspect all Elle plugs for soil moisture.
2) Water any plugs that appear to be dry immediately. If the Elle paper is dry, then the plug is drying out. All plugs arrive with the addition of a wetting agent to facilitate prompt, even water absorption.
3) If the Elle plugs are to be held for a period of time before transplanting, check the plugs regularly to ensure they are evenly moist. Do not let plugs dry out.
4) Just before transplanting, re-check moisture level of all plugs scheduled to be transplanted. Ensure that plugs are thoroughly moist.
