Plants reach 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 15 inches wide, low, spreading mound. Growth rate: Slow, plants spread by short creeping rhizomes.
This unique Heuchera relative is a compact herbaceous perennial with large, green, fan-shaped leaves. Beginning in summer, red pigmentation begins to creep inward from the edges and by fall, they are fire red. Delicate white, star-shaped flowers appear just above the foliage in mid to late spring.
Plant it in humus rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil and partial shade. Tolerates full sun in northern growing range, in southern zones Mukdenia needs afternoon shade or sun dappled shade. If grown in full sun, consistent moisture is important. Clumps can be divided about every 4 years or so. Mukdenia can be found growing naturally in the woodlands, rocky slopes and ravines of China, Manchuria and Korea.
