Lobelia fulgens 'Queen Victoria' (30)ct Ellepots
Common name: Cardinal Flower, Mexican Lobelia.
Zones 5 to 9.
Full sun to part shade.
Plants reach 36 to 60 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide; Herbaceous, clump-forming perennial. Growth rate: Moderate.
Vivid red flower spikes stand tall above reddish-bronze foliage from late summer through fall. 'Queen Victoria' will tolerate full sun in cool, northern climates, but otherwise plant in part shade. Deadheading spent blooms will improve the overall appearance of the plant and may promote reblooming. 'Queen Victoria' differs from the species with its vigor, tremendous flower output, and leaf color. This hybrid cultivar is also more adapted to garden conditions and will generally live longer than the perennial species lobelias Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit 1998
Cardinal flower grows well in rich, organic, medium to wet soils. The perfect plant for damp locations such as near ponds or low-lying areas, Lobelia will easily adapt to 'wet feet', but can tolerate well-drained soils with constant moisture. Divide clumps in spring as needed. Prune in the spring instead of the fall, as the foliage will help protect the root zone in the winter. Mulch is also recommended.
Lobelia is native to much of North America, naturally occurring as far north as New Brunswick, south to Florida, and west to Texas in moist locations along streams, sloughs, springs, swamps and in low wooded areas. Attributes: bog plant, border plant, cut flower, and mass plantings. Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and songbirds. Deer and rabbit resistant. |
