Dicentra 'Burning Hearts' PPAF
a/k/a Bleeding Heart-Fern leaved
Zones 3 to 9; Full Sun to full shade. Mature size 10 to 12 inch height, spreads 12 inches.
Red flowers on a Dicentra like you have never seen. The contrast between the blue-gray, ferny foliage and bright rose red, heart-shaped flowers is striking. This plant forms a compact mound of foliage topped with arched flowering stems from late spring into early fall.
Though it can tolerate some sun, Dicentra is most at home in woodland settings. It likes rich, loose soil that is evenly moist but also well-drained. At planting time, add lots of compost, humus, or peat moss to the soil to enhance its water retention capabilities. Plants will not grow well in heavy clay soils. Dicentra should be planted in locations that are protected from high winds and early frosts, such as the edges of woodlands or on the north or east sides of buildings.
It looks beautiful as a specimen in containers but could also be incorporated into the front of the border or along pathways. The compact height and early flowering capability makes this plant suitable for production as a spring flowering perennial, containerized plant, or even as an indoor flowering house plant. A 2008 introduction won the Plantarium Gold Medal in 2008.
Use this long bloomer as border plants, containers, for cut flowers, for edging, and in mass plantings. |
