A plethora of 2 inch, lily-like, flowers are produced on compact, erect, rhizomatous perennial plants. Six-petal flower shades vary from bright yellow-orange to near red, and are heavily spotted with red dots. Flowers appear in mid to late summer in sprays above the sword-shaped like foliage on wiry, 3+ foot stems. Attention-grabbing seed pods extends Belamcanda season of interest into fall as tan, pear-shaped pods open to expose clusters of black seeds. The seeds, which resemble blackberries, last through the winter or may be used in fresh or dried flower arrangements.
Blackberry lilies are easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils; poorly-drained soil, particularly in winter, could be fatal. Plant height varies depending on the soil conditions. A heavy layer of mulch is suggested for northern winters. For best results, divide in early spring. Plants may self-seed in optimum growing conditions which helps keep these somewhat short-lived perennials in the garden.
