Glossy, near-black, scalloped leaves with a dense habit. For the darkest foliage color, plant 'Black Scallop' PP15815 in full sun, in cooler temperature zones. From mid to late spring, 4 to 6 inch spikes of deep blue flowers stand upright above the low, spreading foliage.
'Black Scallop' PP15815 tends to spread more slowly and stay naturally compact compared to other kinds of Ajuga, making it suitable for use as an edging. It also fits nicely into rock gardens and mixed container plantings. It is reported to be resistant to powdery mildew.
Prefers sandy, well-drained soil, or moist conditions with a good drainage. Tolerates most any soil including clay, as long as it is well-drained. Good air circulation is essential to avoid crown rot. Ajuga grows best in partial to full shade but will also grow in full sun if constant moisture is provided.
Ajuga grows in the shade of large trees where grass is hard to establish. Unlike many perennials that are grown only for their flowers, ajuga is prized for its attractive, colorful foliage that looks nice all year. Plants may be mowed on high setting after blooming in order to remove spent flower spikes and to tidy the appearance of the planting.
